The bisexuality is a sexual orientation that is neither homosexuality
nor heterosexuality. It may be defined in many ways but it is, basically, directed
to sexual feelings or sexual behavior, in which a person feels sexual attraction
towards both men and women, not necessarily in the same intensity, because some
bisexuals feel more strongly attracted to one gender than the other. Bisexuality,
however, describes how people feel, not necessarily how they act - a bisexual,
for example, can decide to remain celibate and still be considered bisexual
by himself and others.
The preconception related to gays also exists for bisexual people,
because they are seem for many individuals as promiscuous. This so because almost
everyone is taught to look at things in the universe as a duality: light and
dark, male and female, hot and cold, etc. For this reason, many bisexuals who
feel more attracted to members of the same sex might identify themselves as
gays or lesbians rather than bisexuals or, those who feel attracted to members
of the opposite sex might view themselves as heterosexuals.
The Catholic Church also helps to disseminate the prejudice. They
teach that bisexuals can convert to heterosexuality through reparative therapy
and prayer. Psychologists and medics, however, say that all three sexual orientations
- homosexuality, bisexuality and heterosexuality - are natural and normal for
some people and they aren't consciously chosen and aren't changeable through
therapy, prayer, surgical intervention and others. Bisexuals aren't perverse
and they are capable of being monogamous and commit themselves to a single partner.
Other myth is about the sexual health. Bisexual people aren't
more inclined to spread Aids. Anyone, from all sexual orientations, can catch
a sexual transmitted disease (STD). The solution to the problem of the sexual
diseases is the safer sex techniques, like the use of a condom. Many people,
unfortunately, continue denying their own sexual orientations to be accepted
by a society that didn't receive a good sexual education. They should show to
their relatives and friends that the bisexual behavior is as natural as demand
respect.
